Long time coming
There's no place like home, which is why I'm back.
Strangely, it was possibly one of the smallest, simplest pleasures on earth that's drawn me back: white pegs. Yep, that's right. Pegs.
I like clothes. I particularly like my clothes. I spend probably more than I can afford but I have a thing about quality over quantity. I even like laundering my clothes - and hanging them to dry. What I don't like is multi-coloured bits of plastic digging into my lovely things and ruining the look for me. To paraphrase a past editor of Vogue Living, if I see things in a setting I don't like I delete them from my visual field. Which is exactly what I've been doing with pegs for years (I'm a simple soul).
Sure, I could have bought packets of pegs and discarded all the coloured ones and built a collection of white - but too wasteful. Tried wooden pegs, but no good if caught unawares in the rain.
So when I found these inoffensive little Japanese beauties in Dollar King at Leichhardt this morning, I bought packets of them. They're made by Daiso, which I learned after a quick google, is Japan's top $2 shop - and we have four of them right here in Sydney.
I don't know why it's taken so long for someone to think of white pegs. I've been looking for (affordable) ones for years. Trust the Japanese to keep it simple.
George Street here I come.
Have a lovely weekend.
Welcome back... I understand the value you place on the simple peg and the hanging of your clothes, some of my clothes never go anywhere near the clothes line but instead are dried on a clothes airer that has nice big rungs leaving minimal markings of how they were hung. I can also relate dislike for coloured plastic pegs, I have used wooden pegs for many years and they have never been disappointed me. I like wood, but your new simple white pegs look great. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteHello Marie-Nicole! Nice to hear from you. x
DeleteHello Vera, so nice to have you back (I hope you'll stay for a while...) I am very fussy about how I wash and dry my clothes too. I even thread old pantyhose through the sleeves of extra-special things and hang them that way avoiding pegs all together (my Nan used to do this).
ReplyDeleteOnly you could make a plastic peg look this stylish btw.
Thanks Kylie, I do plan on staying. Just getting back into the swing of things.
DeleteWelcome back! What have you been doing since your last post?
ReplyDeleteI too am very particular about my pegs....Iat one time I would only use dolly pegs....but I've gone over to a very superior thick pretty plastic variety which do not snap like other plastic ones..
You don't want to know what I've been up to, honestly. Too tedious for words... x
DeleteWell hello there, your comeback has put a smile on my face. Please stay!
ReplyDeleteWe have a Daiso not too far away from us as it happens so I may have to think up a reason to visit and buy white pegs. They look really good. I completely understand your relationship with pegs, it is very difficult to find the right one. The wooden dolly pegs look the part and are fun if you fancy making a quick painted/decorated lady but in terms of their actual use, I only put them on heavy duty things like jeans as I don't trust them with more delicate fabrics. I use an airer too but in the event of ever getting some lovely outside drying weather, Daiso here I come!
Happy weekend x
Dear Kate, I see you're a Canadian now! I'm liking not having been to Daiso yet as I want it to be like Muji if it was a $2 shop. However am fearing the very real possibility of being faced with lots of plastic stuff with pictures of kittens on it all. x
DeleteNo no no, not at all like Muji. In fact you were right, plastic kittie overload is definitely the Daiso way. My daughter loved it. I, on the other hand ....
DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteYou're back. Hip, hip, hooray! I've missed your posts and slices of your life in Sydney.
I'm a no-plastic woman. I currently use wooden pegs but, they don't make 'em like they used to, and they constantly break up.
However, I have some lovely metal French pegs that I'll be using when we finally move back to Australia. It'll be great to hang my washing outside again. I've been using a wooden indoor rack for years...
Best wishes from London
Jo
Welcome back Vera. How lovely to find your gorgeous as always photos waiting in my inbox. I hadn't realised that white pegs were the answer to laundry day but as soon as I saw yours I knew they were and now I will have to haunt the $2 shops until I find my own supply. I don't use our line for much anymore. Instead I have some enormous wheeling racks which move in and outside according to the weather. They are particularly useful if I am running short of time as the whole lot just hides in the laundry until I have time to deal with it.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen you for ages. I hope you're quite ok. White pegs look so nice in the form of a heart - brilliant idea to take a photo of them:) They do leave markings still on the clothes, don't they?
